In this short documentary about gender as a ritualized cultural performance, communication scholar Sut Jhally talks about the late Erving Goffman’s analysis of advertising and applies it to the “contemporary commercial landscape” (TV ads, glossy magazines, billboards, etc.) You should watch it, it’s actually really interesting. Funny how there are so many aspects of advertising linked to the stereotypical “male” or “female” gender. It shows how seemingly trivial things - strength of the grasp of a hand, angle of the head, balance, facial expression - all weave together in advertising to form the socially accepted view of “Man = strong, powerful; woman = weak, submissive”. I’d recommend it to… everyone.
I’m starting a new art project that I’ve titled ‘Men’ for the moment. Basically, I’m going to sketch people who identify as a man or male on a brightly colored background (although this might change). I haven’t totally decided on the media, but I’m leaning towards ink and pen.
How does this concern you guys? Well, I need people to sketch. I’m trying to get a wide variety of people who identify as male - people with different sexualities, gender identities (trans*, cis, etc.), races, etc. Unfortunately, I don’t have many people to ask in real life - most of my male friends are cisgendered, straight Asians (mostly Chinese, Filipino or Indian) from the same kind of socioeconomic background. So I’m appealing to the internet.
If you’re willing to let me try sketch you, send me a picture at firiathmortal[at]gmail[dot]com or submit it athttp://asingledomino.tumblr.com/submit . I will not release any pictures, but if you request it, I can send you an image of the sketch. Also, if you don’t mind, I wouldn’t mind posting a few of the portraits up.
Pictures should ideally be
- Well lit
- No part of the face or hair should be cut out of the picture
- The top of the shoulders should be shown
- Anyone over 18
Feel free to leave me any additional information - anything about you. I might have use for random bits of information depending on how I decide to present it. However, this is mostly for a personal art project - nothing to do with school, or any other thing. It might be displayed in an art show, however nothing is certain at this point.
Please note that I’m not particularly skilled at sketching portraits - in fact I’ve never really taken up a project anything like this before. I also might not get around to doing everybody, especially if I notice that there is a clear majority in the different types of people. For example, if I notice that there are too many of a particular race, I might hold back on sketching people of that race for a while until I feel like there is more of a balance in terms of race.
