Are there any statistics for how many people (either in the world or in the United States) identify as trans or non-binary? I'm curious, but I'm not really finding anything conclusive. (And I know this is probably hard to calculate, because you need to take into account out/not-out, etc., but I was wondering if the lovely people at this blog had found anything interesting on the matter?)

There might be, in about 100 years time.

During the last recent census there was a movement to encourage non-binary people to muck around with the “What is your gender?” question, which presented two boxes with either Male or Female. People decided to add in another option and tick it and ignore the male/female boxes, or tick the box they identified with closest to/were assigned at birth but write a comment about non-binary genders, or just otherwise deface it. Census data is only publicly released 100 years after it’s taken.

Nat Titman of Practical Androgyny sent in a Freedom of Information request about it, here you can find the response.

Hi everyone. My name is Sam. I’m a newly-identified genderqueer individual; I’m 24, pre-everything (I’m hoping for eventual top surgery, maybe) and pretty confused about everything right now and would love someone to talk to about being genderqueer. I’m also pansexual, so I feel really marginalized within the lgbt community. Again, I’d love some support (and I’ll give back as much support as I can) with these issues, and I’d love to make friends. My interests include video games (Red Dead Redemption is my favorite), Westerns, Johnny Cash, horror movies, zombies, and Supernatural. Oh, and Joss Whedon. This is something I’ve mentioned a few times here, but never got around to doing.

The queer community is, as a whole, focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual and to a lesser extent binary trans experiences. They dominate the majority of the discussion, both online and in the media (see: focus on “gay marriage” as opposed to “marriage equality”). A lot of people don’t know that non-heterosexual/cisgender experiences outside of these exist.

For people who are not straight or cis but are also not lesbian, gay, bi or binary trans, finding a sense of community identity can be tough or impossible. There are sometimes spaces that advertise themselves as safe for ALL identities, but later on you discover they want you to pick between male or female, or gay/bi/straight/unsure. While the number of people who identify as non-het but also not L, G, B or binary T is large, the community is often overlooked.

This is a way for us to get to know each other, a way to meet people, make friends and show yourself to the world.

This project is open to…

People who are non-binary trans*: genderqueer, genderfluid, androgynous, two-spirit, and so on - whether straight or not

People who are pansexual, polysexual, demisexual, asexual, omnisexual, anyone who is not straight but is also not LGB

So to be clear: if you are not trans, you CAN participate, but only if you are also not straight, lesbian, gay or bi. If you are straight, lesbian, gay or bi, you CAN participate, as long as you are not also cis.

What is it?

A video project. It is loosely based on the following prompts.

What do I need to do?

Send me a clip of yourself responding to the prompts. Try to make the sound and video as clear as possible but don’t fret if it’s not amazing. The clip doesn’t have to be a specific time (purely because I can’t think of how long it should be) but be aware that pauses and ummmms may be removed. Also, if this thing ends up looking really long, I might have to keep only the best bits, though if this happens I will try and include a bit of everyone’s submissions.

How do you identify?

What’s your favourite thing about identifying the way you do?

When and how did you discover your identify?

I’m really sorry. I have seen so many differing voices (from intersex people) on whether they should be considered part of the LGBT++++ community, with some vocally opposing it on the grounds that their experiences have often been appropriated by other queer people and that being intersex is very, very different from being non-straight or non-cis (the only reason they are related is that they are all related to sex/gender). I figured it was best not to say anything as I don’t feel educated enough to make sure I don’t fuck up. I figured that if indivual intersex people wanted to participate if they felt like they wanted too, they would. However I was obviously not clear.

So to be explicit about it: intersex people, you are very very welcome to join in!

I really love your project! That said, I'm hard of hearing and videos are about impossible to understand. Can we make this accessible for the d/Deaf community?

Hello,My name is Mark Doebler; I am an undergraduate researcher at Michigan State University and I am trying to add more accurate representation of gender and sexual minority groups to research in the social sciences. This survey is analyzing aspects of attraction from diverse groups and is particularly looking for individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, pansexual, genderqueer and any other sexual or gender minority identity. I am additionally looking for any polyamorous and kink or BDSM identities to get a more holistic understanding of attraction that is typically seen in research.
